HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELS

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELS

I guarantee that most of us are not cleaning our jewelry as often as we should, and that needs to stop! Most of us wear fine jewelry on a regular basis and therefore, it should be cleaned on a regular basis. And btw, wearing jewelry in the shower does not count as a cleaning session.

I personally recommend cleaning jewelry on a bi-weekly basis. Without routine cleanings, diamonds and gold will lose its luster and sparkle... gold becomes darker and diamonds are less colorful. Ew!

Please note we have separate cleaning guides below for diamonds and for colored gemstones

What you need for both cleaning guides:
- soap (dish soap or jewelry cleaning solution)
- water
- soft bristle brush (I use a toothbrush)
- towel
- two bowls

GUIDE #1: DIAMONDS AND GOLD

Step 1: Fill up bowl #1 with hot tap water, add the cleaning solution and jewelry. Let your jewelry sit for 10-15 minutes. This is going to help lift the dirt and buildup on your jewelry.

Step 2: Fill up bowl #2 with hot tap water and cleaning solution, set aside. Using the soft bristle brush, individually clean the jewelry pieces in bowl #1 – be sure to brush both sides of the jewelry. Once you are finished cleaning each piece in bowl #1, place it in bowl #2, so it can sit in clean water. Let it soak there for another 10-15 minutes.

Step 3: Plug the sink. Individually remove each piece of jewelry from bowl #2 and gently run it under the water, rinsing off soap and residue. Lay the jewelry flat on a towel and allow it to completely dry before putting it on.

Some people use generic ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machines from Amazon – I’ve tested a few and they’re OK, but they won’t make your diamonds shine like our 3-step process above. Promise!

GUIDE #2: COLORED GEMSTONES AND GOLD

Step 1: Fill up bowl #1 with lukewarm water and a mild cleaning solution (dish soap or a jewelry cleaner safe for colored gemstones). Let your jewelry sit for 5 minutes. This is going to help lift the dirty and buildup on your jewelry.

Step 2: Fill up bowl #2 with lukewarm water and mild cleaning solution (same as above), set aside. Use a soft bristle brush to gently individually clean the jewelry pieces in bowl #1 - be sure to brush both sides of the jewelry. Once you are finished cleaning each piece in bowl #1, place it in bowl #2, so it can sit in clean water. Let it soak there for another 5 minutes.

Step 3: Plug the sink. Individually remove each piece of jewelry from bowl #2 and gently run it under the water, rinsing off soap and residue. Lay the jewelry flat on a towel and allow it to completely dry before putting it on.

*Reminder that colored gemstones should never be exposed to hot water, heat, steam, ultrasonic cleaning machines, lemon juice or vinegar.

So fresh and so damn clean, is how your beautiful jewels deserve to be.
